Steffen Dam Awarded Rakow Commission

Danish artist Steffen Dam is the 2012 recipient of the Corning Museum of Glass Rakow Commission, one of the most respected and coveted honors in the world of glass. Inaugurated in 1986 the Rakow commission supports the development of new works of art in glass.  Each commissioned work is added to the museum’s permanent collection. Over the years recipients have ranged from emerging to established artists. Currently, the commission is awarded to professional artists whose work is not yet represented in the museum’s collection.  Commissions are nominated by the curator of modern glass, and they are selected by a Museum curatorial staff committee.

Steffen Dam creates imaginary specimens inspired by his childhood experience observing his grandparents’ insect cabinets and books which featured plates of plants and animals.  This body of work has developed in different periods over the last decade from pieces inspired by life forms from the sea, plant life or objects without a clear connection to nature.  Steffen Dam’s work is included in collections of the Museum of Arts and Design, New York, NY; the Museum fur Kunst und Gewerbe, Hamburg, Germany; The Danish Museum of Decorative Art, Copenhagen, Denmark; the Glasmuseet Ebeltoft, Ebeltoft, Denmark; the Palm Springs Art Museum, Palm Springs, CA, The Chazen Museum, Madison, WI, and soon, the Corning Museum of Glass, Corning, NY.
