Artist of the Month

Mark Leputa

Mark Leputa’s work is inspired by his travels and time in nature. His sculptures evoke mountains, glaciers, and other natural forms. Leputa heats and molds glass to the shape he wants, then allows it to cool in order to carve texture and layers into the piece. The resulting sculptures, created with great precision, bring an experience of deep joy and serenity to the viewer. Leputa is represented by Winterowd Fine Art, Santa Fe, New Mexico.

About Mark Leputa

For Mark Leputa, the greatest sense of satisfaction and pride are found in the hands-on creation process. He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 2003 with a BA in Communications. During this time Mark felt his imagination was being suppressed and often turned to art to liberate the ideas boiling within. On a holiday in New Zealand in 2004, Mark finally discovered his medium. He was liberated at last into the dynamic and ever challenging world of glass making.

The heat, the fire, the seemingly liquid state that this material is worked in entranced Mark. This experience forever changed him, and he has not looked back. His short vacation in New Zealand turned into a three-year apprentiship. During this time he was able to define and create a body of work where simplicity, purity of form, and negative space merge to create harmony.
