The Bystander Effect examines the role that we, as a society, had in allowing an architecture of containment to develop in Northern Ireland. Architecture of containment describes the physical infrastructure and systems that were utilized to incarcerate women and children in 18th and 19th century Ireland. These institutions included: industrial schools, children’s homes, mother and baby Institutions, and Magdalene Laundries. Attempting to exhume our most recent past and its subsequent intergenerational trauma, Alison Lowry creates a sculptural piece of found objects that questions whether survivors of institutions will ever get the justice they deserve.
