Artist Statement:
I am most interested in color, especially color relationships in the works I create in blown glass. Utilizing traditional Italian cane (or striping) techniques in new and personalized ways is the driving force behind most of my current designs. I consider the pieces I make to be documents along the way of a (hopefully) life-long journey of both refining the necessary skills and developing the patience one needs in order to create with this captivating and mesmerizing molten material.
About Joshua Bernbaum
Chesterfield Gallery is pleased to be representing artist Joshua Bernbaum, who lives and works in Brattleboro, Vermont. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts with honors from the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston, MA. He specializes in handmade, furnace blown sculptures. Chesterfield Galley will be exhibiting his newest sculptures in a solo exhibition in 2017.
Joshua's vessels feature his "introverre" technique; he melts colored glass rods to create the beautiful linear pattern you see inside his sculptures. The outside of the vessel is then carved by hand once the glass has cooled to room temperature.
He similarly employs the technique on his wall hangings, but the technique is referred to as "extroverre." He creates the same linear pattern with melted, colored glass rods, but in this context, the glass acts as a canvas projecting from the wall and the pattern resembles a form of painting. Thus, he refers to the classic medium of painting, yet contemporizes it with his use of glass.
