Notes for the event

Otis alumna Alison Saar fuses her paradoxical responses to the black-and-white delineations of political and social forces into a powerful, visual, and kinesthetic tension. Her exhibition, STILL..., gathers together for the first time four never-exhibited works made during her residency at Pilchuck Glass School in Seattle with six new bronze and mixed-media sculptures. Saar uses the history and associations of her materials, everyday experience, African art and ritual, Greek mythology, and the stark sculptural tradition of German Expressionism to infuse her work with a primal intensity that challenges cultural and historic references and stereotypes.

Semmes, a Brooklyn-based artist, is known internationally for her unique installations. The show will include pieces from her major series created in several media, including glass. Semmes' ceramic and crystal pots defy the time honored symmetry and beauty expected in pottery and glass. All That Glitters is based on the simplicity of form and glimmer of glass in contemporary cold-worked sculpture.
