AACG 2019 Member Trip: Wisconsin

AACG 2019 Member Trip: Wisconsin

Our trip starts with dinner Wednesday evening. Please arrive by 5:00 pm.  Our trip ends after dinner on Saturday night. You can leave anytime on Sunday, September 22.

In Milwaukee we’ll visit The Milwaukee Art Museum with its wonderful glass collection. We’ll time it exactly right so we can see the wings of the museum open up! We will visit four homes to see their art collections. Also in Milwaukee we’ll visit the Harley-Davidson Museum, and because of our timely visit, we will see Sculpture Milwaukee, a very special exhibition of 23 outdoor sculpture pieces set up for a limited time in downtown Milwaukee.

On a day trip to Racine, we’ll first visit The Racine Art Museum. Once there, we will have a docent led tour and free time in the gift shop!  Then on to the S.C. Johnson & Son Wax Headquarters where we’ll see the last commercial building designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.   It is one of the most important buildings of the 20th century. It has been designated a National Historical Landmark.

On Saturday, we have several places to visit! Our first stop is Kohler Design Center and the Kohler Art Center. From there we’ll visit glass artist Beth Lipman’s studio.  Joining Beth will be glass artists: Deanna Clayton, Stephanie Trenchard and Jeremy Popelka who will show us some of their works and explain the techniques they use to create their art.  Then we’ll head to Neenah to visit the Bergstrom-Mahler Museum of Glass, where Executive Director Jan Smith will give us a tour. She has made special arrangements for well-known glass bead artist Joyce Scott to be there to discuss her work in the current exhibit at the Museum.

The last stop will be a visit to a “pop-up glass gallery” organized by glass artist and K. Allen Gallery owner Keith Clayton. Here you’ll have a chance to see and buy a work of art by Keith Clayton, Ross Richmond, Jon Kuhn, Joe Ivacic, Jack Schmidt, Randy Solon, Christen Theilkings, Owen Brady, and Marc Petrovic. Some of these artists will be there to explain their work.

To end this full day and our trip, we will experience a Wisconsin Supper Club. We’ve found one you're sure to enjoy on our way back to Milwaukee, in Fond du Lac. Steeped in tradition, the actual birthplace of the supper club was in the Prohibition speakeasies that offered supper in a nightclub as a cover for the real business of serving illegal liquor. Every supper club is steeped in history, with stories of misfortune, serendipity, and mischievous ghosts. Get ready for plenty of food in a relaxed, very casual setting.

Hotel: We’ll stay downtown at a brand new, art-focused hotel:  Saint Kate Arts Hotel. In addition to art-inspired guest rooms, the hotel will feature a gallery, an artist-in-residence studio and a theater space for performances, screenings, talks and workshops. AACG has a very special rate of $219 for king and double bed rooms, and $289 for a suite (called The Hangout King). The room rate includes free wi-fi and a $25 breakfast voucher per person per day. Click here for a link to register at the Saint Kate Arts Hotel.

The trip cost is $750 per person and includes a $200 donation to AACG, three lunches, and dinners on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday (Friday dinner is on your own: a list of recommended restaurants will be provided).
