Recognized as a major contributor to the American studio glass movement, Mary Van Cline occupies a unique place in the history of glass. She is known as the pioneer in inventing techniques that combine glass and photography. In the late 1970's she began working with Kodak to incorporate photosensitive
glass into her sculptures. More recently, her innovative collaboration with industry has enabled Van Cline to work with glass and photography on an even larger scale. Life-long experimentation with pate de verre and mold-making techniques has also allowed her to work on an architectural scale that is rare with these materials.

Mary Van Cline is also a featured artist—the only one working in glass—in Staged Stories: Renwick Craft Invitational 2009, August 7th 2009 through January 3, 2010. This is the fourth in a biennial series at the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum honoring the creativity and talent of craft artists working today. Four artists were chosen by Jane Milosch, Curator and Senior Program Officer, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Paul J. Smith, ermeritus director, American Craft Museum, and Kate Bonansinga. Bonansinga is the guest curator for the exhibition which is supported by the Ryna and Melvin Cohen Family Foundation.

The restrained and refined imagery of Van Cline's work is echoed in her use of materials and has found wide appreciation. Art critic Ron Glowen states in American Craft magazine “Van Cline's singular blend of glass and photography brings memory, vision, place and time into focus.”Curator Kate Bonansinga writes of Van Cline's “austere landscapes that evoke an enduring stillness.” These and other writers have recognized that Van Cline's innovations are both technical and aesthetic and that she has added greatly to a wider understanding of the role glass can play in contemporary art.

Mary Van Cline's work will be shown at Habatat Galleries, Virginia, in a one-person exhibition, September through December. The exhibition will include recent sculptural works, including a new series that is being sold to support the preparation and publication of a first-ever book about Van Cline's art. Called the “Inochi Series”, these works reflect Van Cline's lifelong interest in an Asian imagery and aesthetic.
