A prolific innovator, Therman Statom's artistic endeavors run the gamut from intimate glass houses, divided or constructed paintings, to site-specific installations and public art commissions.  His assemblage approach to
art, utilizes his skills as a painter, glass blower, architect and teacher. Found objects such as maps or photographs mingle with blown glass vessels, glass shards and painted imagery.  In the hands of Statom, seemingly disparate images come together creating a visual harmony, which   encourages the viewer to consider something larger, more significant than a single object.  Ladders, leaves, playing cards, evoke themes of growth, changes, and direction Statom's signature writings mark each surface, instilling a lasting sense of immediacy, as if the artist has just completed the work.
Statom's interest in "new ways of seeing the material" has expanded the public's understanding of the creative possibilities for the media of glass.  Statom's approach to art is inclusive and inviting. When working on site-specific installations Statom will often conduct a workshop or include children in the creative process.
Statom says,"Experimentation with materials and art-making processes is essential.  I've always wanted my work to challenge me.  In graduate school I began using plate glass constructing large-scale installations

on site.  I found I liked working against the clock with limited materials; I was tested artistically.  The installations have generated smaller glass and mixed media sculptures that I could make in the studio, typically chairs, houses, tables, ladders, rectangular boxes and most recently, branches.  Even if I'm making repetitive forms I want them to confront the viewer.
I'm interested in painting and developing personal content in my work.  Many images have specific symbolic references and implications, which can also be emotional.  I have always been interested in my work addressing the intuitive and spiritual side of people."
