Prominent Art Figure is New Canberra Glassworks Chair
One of Australia’s leading cultural and artistic figures has been appointed as new Chair of the Canberra Glassworks. Andrew Sayers, the current Director of the National Museum of Australia,
will replace John Mackay, who will become Chancellor of the University of Canberra after five years in the inaugural Glassworks Chair.
Andrew Sayers was the Director of the National Portrait Gallery for 12 years from 1998 and appointed the Director of the National Museum of Australia in June 2010, providing a strong link between the Canberra Glassworks and National Cultural Institutions. He is credited with transforming the National Portrait Gallery into the highly successful institution that it is today.
Opened in 2007, Canberra Glassworks is Australia's only cultural centre that is wholly dedicated to contemporary glass art. It provides artists with state-of-the-art equipment; workshops taught by leading glass artists; studios and mentorship programs; and a unique context to explore, develop and realize new work.
