New Glass Museum Opens in Massachusetts
The New Bedford Museum of Glass (Massachusetts) opened in September in this historic town where an extensive glass industry once flourished in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Originally founded as The Glass Art Center in 1993 and affiliated with Bradford College, when Bradford closed in 2000 the Center became homeless. In 2005, local glass authority Louis O. St. Aubin, Jr. suggested the Center relocate to New Bedford. Changing its name to The New Bedford Museum of Glass, the nonprofit worked toward its goal of opening a museum and is now building a collection that includes art glass made in New Bedford by the Mt. Washington and Pairpoint factories, glass from the Midwest and other regions of the country, English and Continental glass, ancient glass, American historical glass, paperweights and studio glass.
